Why the environment matters to me…

UNTHA News - Alina

To celebrate all things sustainability, help share tips for smarter environmental thinking and remind each other just how much our carbon impact matters, we’re inviting colleagues, friends of the business and our peers in the wider industry to take part in our quickfire environmental Q&A.

Next up, it’s Alina Calin, UNTHA UK’s PA and office administrator…

Where do you fit into the environmental sector? Tell us a little bit about your role at UNTHA…

My role at UNTHA sees me leverage excellent organisational skills to keep activity at HQ running like clockwork – in turn, allowing the senior management and sales teams to focus on core business activity and supercharge the company’s growth even further.

Complete the sentence – the UK is great at recycling…

… but certainly has room to improve its environmental efforts!

Which sector do you think could achieve significant environmental progress this year?

The production of traditional energy is responsible for one of the largest industrial contributions to global carbon emissions. With such a significant transformation underway as the sector aims to reach net zero by 2050, I think – and hope – progress will accelerate soon.

What do you wish you’d known about the environment, as a child?

I wish I’d known more about how to recycle, as well as why it’s so important.

What’s the single biggest threat to the environment, in your opinion?

Climate change.

Share 1 tip to help people be ‘greener’, at work or at home:

At work, there are many merits to becoming a paperless office – and it’s so easy to go digital nowadays too!

At home, I’d suggest using natural materials as much as possible, as they can decompose and won’t harm our ecosystem.

Tell us an environmental statistic that you think people need to know:

It is estimated that 10 million hectares of forest are cut down globally each year. Biotech firms are increasingly turning to genetic modification to help curb this crisis – for example, by creating fast-growing trees that can rapidly soak up atmospheric carbon dioxide.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever reused/upcycled?

I think we should celebrate simple things, like plastic bottles and batteries, which are so simple to recycle and can be correctly disposed of with ease.

If you were prime minister for the day, what’s the one thing you’d do to improve the UK’s sustainability agenda?

Introduce more – as well as protect and maintain existing – green spaces like parks, woods, and community gardens. I’d also make education a top priority for younger generations, in terms of the impact individuals can have on the environment to create a better future for all.

Complete the sentence – in 100 years’ time…

I hope we can improve our planet by taking care and responsibility of it.
