Biomass shredders

Demand for biomass is heating up

Whilst wood and forestry residue offer primary heat sources in countries such as Kenya, Niger and Tanzania, the refined processing of waste wood to produce a specified biomass fuel for the commercial market, is becoming increasingly common in many wider parts of the world. Global demand for biomass pellets is expected to nearly double to 53 million tonnes by 2023, with approximately 60% of this requirement predicted to come from the EU and Asia. Biomass has never been such a hot topic…

Speak to us about biomass
  • Why shred to produce biomass?

Wood is an important and readily available commodity that can so easily be considered a waste if not salvaged and processed for either the recycling or biomass market.

  • Why shred to produce biomass?

Grade C wood that is not suitable for remanufacturing or recycling into panel board (without treatment or separation systems) or animal feed, still has a role to play in the waste hierarchy via the energy recovery route. It is commonly found on construction and demolition sites, as well as in both the industrial and municipal sectors.

  • Why shred to produce biomass?

Biomass fuel is being readily sought by board mills and alternative fuel plants throughout the UK and overseas, meaning a revenue yield can be generated from the sale of this valuable output product.

  • Why shred to produce biomass?

Technology has advanced so that wood shredding for biomass is now far safer, easier and more profitable than ever before. Gone are the days when biomass fuel production had to be a high speed, energy-intensive and costly process, troubled with machine downtime.

  • How can UNTHA help you produce biomass?

UNTHA has a fleet of tried-and-tested wood shredders, engineered with input from the biomass industry, and in use by operators worldwide. There’s no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ approach to a project – instead we listen carefully to each organisation’s requirements and can recommend a single piece of machinery or complete turnkey solution, to manufacture a high-quality fuel as efficiently as possible.

  • How can UNTHA help you produce biomass?

We’ve challenged the norm in what is widely considered a dangerous, expensive and often high-hazard waste shredding sector. We’ve invested heavily in high torque, slow speed, electric-driven equipment, which boasts impressive throughputs, in-built fire suppression technology, more uptime, less dust and better fuel quality than traditional competitor machinery.

Crapper & Sons, for example, transforms 30 tonnes of wood waste per hour into a P63-specification biomass fuel, with less than 6% <10mm fines. The product is sold to board mills and biomass plants across the country, and more than £3000 of revenue is generated per week from the sale of clean metals extracted directly from the magnet belt.

That same client is also now able to manufacture a higher quality, on-specification biomass fuel, with only one shredder not two, and with 20% more uptime. But we’re pleased to say, this is not an isolated case – these are the types of results we promise for many organisations. And if we don’t think they’re feasible, we’ll be honest about how we think you should progress.

What specifications can our shredders achieve?

Our range of biomass shredders

  • This world-renowned machine has changed the face of biomass shredding, promising defined fraction sizing, low maintenance and uninterrupted shredding with minimum fuss.

  • Popular with operators who prefer to alternate the location of their unit, from a fire safety and insurance perspective. Also easy to move around a site to handle different wood streams.

Eco Sustainable Solutions

“This is traditionally an energy-hungry sector, with noisy, high wear and high maintenance equipment. But as we prepare to upscale our renewables agenda, it is important that we have the most cost- and environmentally-efficient technology in place to support our operations. We were impressed by not only the UNTHA machine, but also the performance commitment and professional service of the team.”

Justin Dampney, operations director
