UNTHA UK – Staff in the spotlight
In this inaugural employee Q&A, UNTHA UK’s managing director Chris Oldfield steps into the spotlight and reveals his love for staff development, client problem solving and guitars!
Name: Chris Oldfield
Job title: Managing director
1. What does your role entail?
Having been at the helm of this company for almost 20 years, I now have an overarching role to steer the strategic evolution of the business, and the personal development of our team. In the last three years I have also taken on a more ambassadorial stance, representing UNTHA UK at leading industry events and passing on knowledge to help drive wider progress in the resource sector.
2. How long have you been with the company?
I founded Riverside Waste Machinery at the turn of 1997/98 and have sold UNTHA shredders in the UK since 1999. In 2011, our success attracted the attention of the Austrian brand, and we formed the new company, UNTHA UK, in November that year.
3. What’s the best thing about your job?
The ability to identify a problem, challenge or opportunity that a client faces, often before they even realise it themselves, and devise a solution specific to those needs. Sometimes even the smallest nugget of an idea can be a complete game changer for that customer, so to see the resulting technologies in action is a fantastic feeling.
4. For you, which is UNTHA’s stand-out shredder?
It has to be the XR Cutter waste shredder, which is completely ahead of the curve when it comes to single step SRF production. We outclass the competition in terms of energy efficiency, power savings, noise minimisation, throughputs and profitable alternative fuel production.
5. Which is your favourite UNTHA project?
We have been involved in so many projects across both the waste and recycling sector, but a stand-out job for me was the development of a completely bespoke solution that I personally devised to shred used beverage cans (UBCs). Using the RS60 four shaft shredder we were able to separate and liberate the steel, widgets and contamination, leaving us with pure aluminium. The client therefore generated a significant revenue stream from the recycling of this valuable resource.
6. What’s been your biggest work achievement, since joining UNTHA?
It has to be the creation of UNTHA UK in 2011, when the Austrian brand invested in our British business. This generated employment, allowed all of our existing staff to develop their knowledge and skills, and enabled us to further strengthen our levels of customer service. A closer working relationship with the heart of UNTHA’s engineering infrastructure plus our unswerving efforts to raise the profile of the brand here in the UK, has also meant that we’ve grown to be the first name on everyone’s lips when it comes to industrial shredding in this country.
7. Describe UNTHA in three words:
The market leader.
And finally some more light-hearted questions:
8. What’s your favourite food?
Steak with onions and mushrooms.
9. How do you relax on a weekend?
My wife and I love to get away in our motor home when we can, and we, together with our two dogs, are discovering many new parts of the UK as a result. I also love music so I try to make as much time as possible to either see live music, or make some of my own!
10. If you were stranded on a desert island, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
My wife of course! However, presuming she’s stranded there with me, I’d have to say my Taylor acoustic guitar.
